SUSAN HAYWARD'S GALLERY
Susan Hayward's work reflects a lifelong interest in equines
and the role that they have played alongside us throughout history. Horses have an intrinsic and diverse place in
our evolution. They have provided food and transport; supported our agricultural development; elevated their owner
on the battlefields of both sport and war with discernable loyalty-and we have celebrated this partnership for
centuries through art.
From the Elgin marbles, to medieval Knights commissioning armour for their mounts, to Stubbs dedicated quest for
anatomical correctness-humankind has appreciated their equine counterpart without seeking to deify it. Susan Hayward's
work touches upon some of our shared past.
